Thanks for your interest in a teaching position with our academy.  This page will give you an idea of our philosophy of teaching and our ideas on how our school can best meet the needs of our students and teachers.

If you are interested in applying for a teaching position after reading this, please fill out this application.  If you have a resume and/or bio, and a favorite photo of yourself, please send them to BrillMusicAcademy1@gmail.com.  But we need the application completed as well.

No phone calls, please.  Music teaching experience and/or a music degree are preferred but we are willing to train the "right" people as long as they possess sufficient skills and demonstrate potential to be excellent teachers.

We will usually reply to your application within a couple of days.  Don't be discouraged if you don't have a formal music education or lack experience in teaching music.  Some of our best teachers had little or no teaching experience when they started with us!  Of course, we also have teachers that have had decades of teaching experience, college degrees and years of touring under their belts.

School Background

The Brill Music Academy is a privately owned school that was founded in 1998.  We offer private music lessons for all ages; however, about 90% of our students are between 5 and 17 years old.  We welcome adult students, but our suburban market area has resulted in a student base of mainly children.

We realize that most of our students will not become professional musicians.  We strive to provide a fun but educational environment with well-organized administration and first-rate equipment and facilities.

A constant flow of new students to keep schedules as full as possible.

Over the course of the year, students can move or quit.  This can leave a teacher with gaps or holes in their schedule.  Most music schools only advertise in late August and September for new students.  At our school, we spend thousands of dollars on advertising and marketing year round to keep our teachers' schedules as full as possible.  We are continually registering new students for our private music lessons even during typically slower registration months like June and July.

Extras are taken care of -- your only responsibility is to teach!

We have front desk administrators to handle all of the "details" of the business.  From scheduling to collecting fees, these details are handled by our office personnel and not the teacher.  This means the teacher is free to focus on teaching and won't get bogged down with administrative tasks.We do not impose a set curriculum of teaching on you.  We do want you to use lesson books and assign homework for practice, but the books you use should be those you are familiar with and from which you are most effective.

Your time is respected

Our priority for our teachers is to make sure that your time is not abused and your teaching day can be as productive as possible.  For private instruction, we allow for makeup lessons dependent upon the teacher's availability and a reason for the missed lesson.  We strive to keep makeup lessons to a minimum and monitor those who may abuse the privilege.

Annual Recitals

We hold an annual recital each Spring that allows our students to "show their stuff" to family and friends.  Our recitals are voluntary, but everyone is encouraged to perform, regardless of their skill level.

What to expect from us

Competitive pay
We offer 30-minute and 60-minute lessons.  All teachers start at $30 p/hr.  Depending o the level of education and/or professional experience, raises are considered with longevity and retention of student rates, and of course, the profitability of the business.

Schedule flexibility
You tell us when you are available to teach.  Everyone has different lives outside of Brill Music, so if you are available all day, every day, or only a few hours on one day, you are the one to make that decision.  You can change your availability as you need to.....just keep it current with the front desk.  If you tell us that you are available, then when we assign a student to you, you tell us you cannot teach at that time, that makes the school look unorganized and unprofessional....which is not a good thing.  

Respect and appreciation

Excellent teachers don't grow on trees.  We truly value and respect each of our instructors.  Feel free to talk to any of them about what it's like to work at Brill Music.

What we expect from our teachers

1.  Excellent people skills.  Should be outgoing and energetic!

2.  Positive, encouraging attitude.

3.  Quality musicianship.

4.  Dependability, reliability, punctuality and honesty.

5.  True interest in each student's progress and/or improvement to their lives through the study of music.
Some students get more out of having someone cool to hang out with once per week that shows an interest in "what they did last week" or "what's new with you?" than they do out of the music portion of the lesson.  This is particularly true with teenagers.  We feel that our job is to teach music and be a positive role model to each student.

6.  Communication.  We rely heavily on phone calls, texts, and emails to contact our teachers about immediate changes to the schedule, to ask about subbing for a sick teacher, etc.  If you are not very good at returning calls and other means of communication, this might not be the job for you.

9.  Reliable transportation.

10.  No criminal background (Yes, we do check).

Voice Teachers
At least half of our voice students are purely recreational (think American Idol).  Most of these students cannot afford an hour lesson and so they take a 30 minute lesson once a week.  This means you need to be organized and comfortable teaching at this pace.

Piano Teachers
You must be comfortable teaching on state-of-the-art weighted-action digital pianos.

Drum Teachers
You must be comfortable teaching on drum sets with either mesh heads (to reduce sound levels) and/or electronic drums.

Guitar Teachers
You must be comfortable teaching electric and acoustic guitar.  (Amps are provided)

Violin/Viola (String) Teachers
You must be comfortable teaching children and adults.

Woodwinds & Brass Teachers
You must be comfortable teaching multiple instruments.


Brill Music Academy -- Teaching Application

Teacher candidates, please read through all questions before you fill out the application.  Your answers to these questions are important to us in the hiring process.  If you find anything that you don't want to answer, save yourself 10-15 minutes time and don't submit your application. Questions followed by an asterisk require an answer.

A no answer does not mean you aren't a good candidate so please answer honestly to avoid wasting your time and ours.

You will be paid on the 5th and 20th of each month.  For example:  For lessons taught on the 1st thru the 15th, you are paid on the 20th.  For lessons taught on the 16th to the end of the month, you are paid on the 5th.  All positions are part-time and teachers are independent contractors, not employees.  We provide students, a teaching studio, billing, collection, payment processing, bookkeeping, scheduling and customer service.

Important:  We do NOT require that teachers teach only at Brill Music, but if we find that you are advertising and we are competing against each other, obviously we will prefer to send new students to other Brill teachers.  It makes no sense for us to compete "against" our own teachers.  We support you by sending you new students and you support us by not making it harder for us to do so.

Students are considered proprietary property of the Academy as they cost us a substantial amount of marketing dollars to acquire.  If you stop teaching for us, you cannot take our students with you.  This is part of our Teacher's Agreement that you must sign.

We ask for 30 days notice to quit teaching at the Brill Music Academy.

It can take a considerable amount of time to build a large schedule of students.  Depending on the instrument(s) you teach AND your availability, it can take from 3 to 12 months to build a full schedule.  A wide variety of factors contribute to this, including:

**  The popularity of instruments you teach.  (Piano, Voice, & Guitar are the most popular)
**  Your scheduling flexibility (The more hours you are available, the faster your schedule can grow.)
**  The number of days you are available to teach.  (More days = More students)
**  The time of year that you start.  Aug/Sep and Jan/Feb usually have the most enrollments.
**  Your ability to retain students.  (The longer your students stay with you, the faster your schedule grows)

We ask all new teachers to be patient while building your schedule of students.  You won't start with a full schedule unless you are taking the place of a busy teacher that is leaving.
